A telescopic ladder can be compact, practical and safe when it is properly designed, manufactured and used. But a succession of UK investigations has found sampled products with failures involving strength, dimensions, rungs and locking mechanisms—the parts on which a person at height depends.
A pattern, not a single listing
The Ladder Association’s 2022 surveillance study tested 17 telescopic ladders against a limited scope of the applicable EN 131-6 requirements. Fourteen did not pass all of those checks. Reported problems included locking mechanisms, rung spacing, base width, bending and strength. Nine samples were described as incorrectly marked or marketed as conforming to EN 131.
A 2023 follow-up re-tested six products, or the nearest versions then available. The association reported that all six failed the required safety tests and that five claimed EN 131 compliance. The sample sizes matter: this is not evidence that every telescopic ladder is dangerous. It is evidence of a recurring market-surveillance problem.
Some products sold to UK shoppers have failed safety-critical testing, and a standards claim on a listing has not reliably separated the failures from the products that passed.
The listing can outlive the warning
In March 2026, Which? reported finding 100 telescopic-ladder listings that appeared similar or identical to products associated with serious safety concerns. Its wider policy work identified 142 near-identical ladders across 21 platforms. That type of recurrence is difficult for a buyer to see: a different seller name, brand label or photograph may still lead to a substantially similar design.
The Ladder Association has also continued to highlight failed samples obtained through major marketplaces. OPSS product-safety reports provide further examples of individual telescopic ladders presenting serious injury risks, including excessive bending or damage around locking components during testing.
EN 131 is relevant—but the claim is not proof
BSI publishes BS EN 131-6 for telescopic ladders as part of the wider EN 131 ladder series. The standard addresses design requirements and test methods. A genuine conformity claim therefore matters, but the printed words “EN 131” cannot show how a particular item was made or tested.
A standards mark is evidence to record, not a safety test a shopper can perform by sight.
A useful report captures the exact standard wording, manufacturer or importer, product model, batch information and any certificate offered. If those details conflict across the listing, packaging and ladder, describe the claim as suspect or possibly misleading. Do not declare it fraudulent without evidence.
What should a shopper do?
If a ladder seems unsafe, do not climb it or recreate the failure. Keep other people away from it, preserve the product and packaging, and photograph the whole ladder, labels, damaged area and relevant locks. Save the complete listing address, seller details, order confirmation and screenshots before the page changes.

Consumers should also follow the official route for their UK nation. A specialist report does not replace Citizens Advice, Advice Direct Scotland, a Northern Ireland district council, HSE for relevant workplace products, or emergency services.
Why the story matters
This is not simply a story about using a ladder correctly. It is a story about whether marketplace systems, seller verification and product documentation prevent a safety-critical product from reaching a household in the first place. The same product can return under a new listing faster than public warnings travel.
That is why the evidence chain matters: source testing, exact product identity, seller information and the live listing need to remain connected. A report is a signal for assessment, not a confirmed finding—but without the signal, the pattern is harder to see.
